New Providence Farmers’ Market Under Way

by Katherine Stein, The Alternative Press

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – The annual New Providence Farmers Market opened Wednesday in the Presbyterian Church parking lot on Springfield Avenue.

This new location of the market puts it right in the heart of New Providence and is easily visible right off South Street.

The fresh produce is picked daily and provided by local farms. “We are a Jersey Fresh market, all the produce comes only from New Jersey,” said Eliza Murphy, onsite market manager.

The vendors also had many specialties, including dried fruits and nuts, fresh baked cookies, freshly squeezed lemonade, andprepared meals.

Paulo’s Kitchen, a local restaurant on South Street, has a stand selling frozen prepared meals. Their selections included lasagna, chicken cutlet, hand-whipped dressings and fresh Sicilian-style sauces. All the ingredients they use are Jersey fresh, so they do not have to use the chemical sprays that are needed to preserve vegetables during shipping from farther locations. Also, according to Paolo’s Lenny Ojeda, during organic season in about a month, all the vegetables they use in their food are organic and all of the fish are wild caught.

Hoboken Farms’ stand has fresh baked breads, frozen meals, and its famous marinara sauce, which was named Wall Street Journals “top pick.”

The market is also considering having live entertainment, events with activities for kids, and fresh mozzarella-making, according to Murphy.

The market will be open every Wednesday from June 12 to Oct. 30 from noon to 6 p.m.

New Providence Farmers Market has Moved!

The New Providence Farmers Market opened on Wednesday, June 12 at its new location in the Presbyterian Church at New Providence parking lot on Springfield Avenue, just west of South Street.   The new location provides much better visibility for the market because people are able to see it as they drive down Springfield Avenue.

“We are very excited about this new location,” said Michelle Brugger, Business Community spokesperson.  “The Presbyterian Church at New Providence has been so generous and accommodating in offering us the use of its parking lot.  We know that this will make a huge difference in terms of visibility and attendance at the market.”

“Everybody loves a good Farmers Market and New Providence has one of the best around.  We’re excited about having it in our parking lot this year,” said Mike Flavin, associate pastor at the Presbyterian Church at New Providence.  “Personally, I’m looking forward to the pies!”

The New Providence Farmers Market, sponsored by New Providence Business, will be open each Wednesday from June 12 through October 30, noon to 6 PM, rain or shine.  Jersey fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh baked berry pies, honey, dried fruits and nuts, fresh baked breads, delicious crab cakes, fresh mozzarella, are some of the featured items that will be available.

“We would like to thank the Presbyterian Church at New Providence for their generosity and support of this event,” said Jimmy Vardas, Business Community spokesperson.  “We are looking forward to the best Farmers Market yet!”
