More than 300 teams comprising an estimated 9,000 participants will hit the pavement in New Providence on Sunday, June 8, for the fourth-annual 5K Walk and USATF Certified Race, the largest fundraiser of the year for NJ Sharing Network. The theme will be: “To Remember. To Honor. To Give Hope.”
The fun-filled family event will include music, awards, prizes and activities for all ages.
The event has raised nearly $2 million in the past three years. Organizers this year have set an ambitious goal of $1 million, buoyed by the generous support of presenting sponsor, Pfizer, and dozens of corporate partners and generous volunteers.
Each race team has a poignant story. Some teams participate to honor the legacy of someone who died and gave the gift of organs and tissue. Others will walk or race to remember those who died while waiting for an organ. Some teams participate to offer hope for someone currently waiting for an organ or tissue, while many organ recipients participate to celebrate their second chance at life.
“The 5K helps raise funds to support education, donor families, research and public awareness about the life-saving benefits of organ and tissue donation. The event also enables us to remember and honor those touched by transplantation, and to spread awareness about the life-saving and life-restoring gift of organ and tissue donation,” said Elisse Glennon, executive director of the NJ Sharing Network Foundation.
Teams are being organized now as families and friends come together. In some cases, organ recipients will participate with the families of those who donated the organs and tissue that helped them or their loved ones.
In addition, radio personality Greg T. of Z100 will participate in the race and talk from the stage.
“This is our fourth 5K and I am so inspired to see how our dedicated volunteers and supporters have enabled this event to grow so much. While it is a fun-filled day, the mission behind this fundraiser is critical. We want to do everything we can to help eliminate the transplant waiting list,” said Joe Roth, president & CEO of NJ Sharing Network.
More than 120,000 people nationwide, including almost 5,000 people in New Jersey, are awaiting life-saving organ transplants.

President/CEO of NJ Sharing Network expresses appreciation for everyone who supported Share NJ 5K, which took place June 10 in New Providence.
I was truly amazed to see such overwhelming community support for the NJ Sharing Network Foundation’s 2nd annual Share NJ 5K Walk/Run on June 10. Thousands flooded the streets of New Providence that day, including donor families and transplant recipients, to remember those who gave, honor those who received and offer hope to those who continue to wait for the “gift of life.”
Blue skies and warm weather provided an ideal backdrop for every walker, runner, civic group and corporate partner that joined us that day. Together, we showed how much we care about those touched by organ donation and transplantation.
I was also deeply moved by the philanthropic generosity displayed at the Share NJ 5K. The event has already raised a record-breaking $560,000, and we’re still receiving contributions, moving us closer to our goal of $625,000.
The NJ Sharing Network Foundation is committed to supporting the work of NJ Sharing Network and to increasing the number of lives saved through education, research, public awareness and donor family support about the life-saving benefits of organ donation and transplantation.
On behalf of NJ Sharing Network and its Foundation, I thank all those who supported this year’s Share NJ 5K and joined us to honor and remember those touched by the miracle of organ donation and transplantation.

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – On Sunday, June 10, the New Providence Business and Professional Association will host the second annual Share NJ 5K Walk/Run, a 5K Race to Save Lives Through Organ and Tissue Donation.
Registration for the event will start at 7:30 a.m. at the NJ Sharing Network Headquarters, 691 Central Avenue in New Providence. The race will begin at 9 a.m. All proceeds from the event will be used to support the NJ Sharing Network Foundation and their programs designed to increase organ and tissue donation through education and awareness. Nationwide, over 110,000 people are waiting for their second chance. One donor can save the lives of up to 8 people and restore health for over 50 others.
Michelle Brugger, President of the New Providence Business and Professional Association and owner of Martial Arts for Life in downtown New Providence, has put together a team of her students, family, and friends to help support the Second Annual NJ Sharing Network’s 5K Race. Brugger said her team is looking to recruit more members and increase support from the local community.
Last year, more than 4,000 runners and walkers and over 200 teams participated in the inaugural event that raised more than $450,000 for the Sharing Network. The teams were composed of different volunteers, people who received transplants, families of donors, college and high school groups, and hospital partners. These groups came together to honor those who gave, honor those who have received, and provide hope for those who continue to wait. The goal is to make 2012 even bigger.
“As the President of the NP BPA, the host of the event, I wanted to get involved in the only way I know how: getting out there, putting my shoes to the pavement and running, and why do it alone?” Brugger said. “I decided to recruit my students to come out and support the cause with me. So far we have an awesome team and some serious support of the Sharing Network. It’s great to see people step up and help out. This is an amazing cause and it’s great to know that we’re giving people the opportunity to have a second chance at life.”
Brugger asks the community to consider supporting her team in this event by making a financial contribution or joining the Martial Arts for Life team. Anyone interested in supporting Team Martial Arts for Life by becoming part of their team or making a donation, please visit their team site by clicking here. People of all ages are welcome to come out and run. Donations are also welcome. Please make checks payable to NJ Sharing Network Foundation, and mail it to Martial Arts for Life, 1260 Springfield Avenue, New Providence, NJ 07974.
Web Editors Note: Martial Arts for Life exceeded its goals for the event!
